Close portrait of a man holding a camera to his eye

The Observer

The Observer began as a joke — photographers are never in front of the lens — and became a series about the people who usually hold the camera.

The Story

Fellow photographers, assistants and retouchers sat for each other with a cable release and a ten-second timer. The awkwardness is the point, and the tenderness is real.

The Approach

Identical setup for every sitter: same chair, same lens, same grey backdrop. Removing every variable except the person turned the series into a study of posture and nerve.
